Parents ask me whether a ten-year-old will be frightened of the rooms. In my experience they are fine with the rooms and less fine with the material. The South Bridge listings are upfront that their content covers torture, hangings, plague, body-snatching and witch trials, and a guide who is good at that material is good at it in front of everybody. That is why the age minimum jumps to 12 the moment the Torture Exhibition is added at booking.
The Blair Street history tour is the one I point families at. It is 75 minutes, small group, and built around the excavation rather than the ghost stories: audio devices so a child can actually hear, a short film, interactive 3D models and artefacts from the dig that they are allowed to hold. A curious ten-year-old gets more out of holding a clay pipe than out of being shouted at in the dark.

At the flat. A spiral staircase and a step of about two feet rule out wheels entirely, on every underground tour among the six. If that is the constraint, the witches walk is street level, though the Old Town is cobbled and steep and will still make you work.
